French 1844-1910 Henri Rousseau Locations He was born in Laval in the Loire Valley into the family of a plumber. He attended Laval High School as a day student and then as a boarder, after his father became a debtor and his parents had to leave the town upon the seizure of their house. He was mediocre in some subjects at the high school but won prizes for drawing and music. He worked for a lawyer and studied law, but "attempted a small perjury and sought refuge in the army," serving for four years, starting in 1863. With his father's death, Rousseau moved to Paris in 1868 to support his widowed mother as a government employee. In 1871, he was promoted to the toll collector's office in Paris as a tax collector. He started painting seriously in his early forties, and by age 49 he retired from his job to work on his art. His wife died in 1888 and he later remarried. Rousseau claimed he had "no teacher other than nature", although he admitted he had received "some advice" from two established Academic painters, Felix Auguste-Clement and Jean-Leon Gerome. Joachim Wtewael
1566-1638 Flemish Joachim Wtewael Galleries Dutch painter and draughtsman. He was one of the last exponents of MANNERISM. From c. 1590 until 1628, the year of his latest known dated paintings, he employed such typical Mannerist formal devices as brilliant decorative colour, contrived spatial design and contorted poses. He sometimes combined such artifice with naturalism, and this amalgam represents the two approaches Dutch 16th- and 17th-century theorists discussed as uyt den geest (from the imagination) and naer t leven (after life). Wtewaels activity reflects the transition from Mannerism to a more naturalistic style in Dutch art. Slightly over 100 of his paintings and about 80 drawings are known. Subjects from the Bible and mythology predominate; he also painted several portraits, including a Self-portrait (1601; Utrecht, Cent. Mus.).
Nils Blommer
1816 - 1853,was a Swedish painter. Starting his career as an apprentice in Lund he experimented with painting portraits from the age of 20. He achieved some successes and in 1839 he had saved up enough money to move to Stockholm. There he took the name Blomm??r and enrolled in the Fria konsternas akademi. After winning the academy's prize several times he got a stipend in 1847 to travel abroad. He spent time in Paris but later moved to Italy, where he married his wife Edla Gustafva Jansson, also a painter, in November 1852. A few months later he caught a fatal chest disease

Johan Erik Olsson, född 1865, död 1944, svensk konstnär, autodidakt och naivist, bosatt i Kyan, Hälsingland, där han försörjde sig som dagsverkare, laggkärlstillverkare och fotograf. Hans släkt kom från Lima i Dalarna, därav namnet. Som ung vistades han 8 år på Ulleråkers mentalsjukhus i Uppsala. Fram till 1920-talet målade han natur, djur och andra motiv från hemtrakterna i fantasifull, närmast exotisk gestalt. Lim-Johan uppmärksammades inte under sin levnad, men finns i dag representerad på bland annat på Edsbyns museum i Hälsingland och på Moderna Museet i Stockholm. 1944 avled Lim-Johan på Ovanåkers ålderdomshem efter en tids sjukdom. Han är begravd på Ovanåkers kyrkogård, där det sedan 1994 står "LIM-JOHAN" på gravstenen. Hans konst upptäcktes av en tillfällighet av fil.dr. Philibert Humbla, länsintendent på Gävle museum, som bad Hans Lidman att försöka finna så många tavlor av Lim-Johan som möjligt. Lim-Johan räknas i dag bland de förnämsta naivisterna i världen.
